Black History Month Thoughts

Wednesday, February 27, 2013

We are almost at the end of Black History Month and my kids still don't know we are Black. I'm finding out that my past has shaped my views of racial ethnicity but also the future we are building as a family. To be completely honest with you, we have not sat down with the toddlers and the baby to tell them about their rich ethnic history. Mostly because they would not be able to grasp it. When the time comes we will be more than exited to share about the amazing history of people of African descent in Brazil and the US. For now, we feel that it is more powerful to teach about God's love. We don't even focus on speech but action. I recently have been meditating on loving others and how God blesses unity. God gives me some amazing exemples of that in the Bible. The most impressive one to me is found in Psalm 133. It says that God commands a blessing in unity. I'm not trying to make anything easy or erase injustice of the past. I am impressed at the heart of God. I am thankful for the hope I have in His Word. Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. 1 John 3:18ESV
