12 Days of Christmas Devos: what is all about

Monday, December 17, 2018

"But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.”" Matthew 1:20-21 (ESV)

What is Christmas in America all about? If you land here from out of space, what you see is the following:

• everyone is snagging the best deals online and in the mall;
• kids are excelling in their end of the year plays, concerts, and presentations;
• homes are enviably decorated;
• people are spending money beyond their means;
• the poor are still in need among us;
• people are still suffering silently;

You get the point.

I need the Bible to keep me accountable and grounded when it comes to the meaning of Christmas. Jesus will save his people from their sins, is the message the angel brought to Joseph.

I don't need a secular cartoon to tell me, for the Bible tells me so.

Jesus came to save. Yet, there is nothing wrong with grabbing the deals and bowing at the end of the concert and decorating homes. As long as we know that Jesus came to save.

We need salvation. We need comfort and we need healing. Jesus, our Savior can provide all of this and more.

Christmas will come and go, yet, He remains and His years will never end. My encouragement today is that you don't forget what the season is all about. Salvation through Jesus.
